At the Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education, we know that one of the most challenging aspects of graduate school is finding the resources needed to pay for tuition, fees, and basic living expenses. To better assist GRE students with uncovering scholarships and fellowships that will help fund their education, we have collected several links worth exploring below.

  • The Office for Prestigious Fellowships connects students with opportunities to further their intellectual and personal growth.

    This office is a resource for all students and alumni of Fordham University. In particular, the  seeks to work with students who have demonstrated exceptional promise and who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, leadership activities, and a passion for creating positive change in their communities and the larger world.

  • The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships
    The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship competition might explore the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature.

    Fellowships for Latinx, Asian, and First Nations Doctoral Students
    Financial support for doctoral students who have completed the coursework stage of their Ph.D. or Th.D. program in religion, theological studies, or biblical studies. Applicants must be of Latino/a, Asian, or First Nations descent enrolled or admitted full-time in a Th.D. or Ph.D. program in religion, theological studies, or biblical studies.

    International Dissertation Research Grants
    The International Dissertation Research Grants Program is designed to support American Academy of Religion (AAR) student members whose dissertation research requires them to travel outside of the country in which their school or university is located. Grants are intended to help candidates complete their doctoral degrees by offsetting costs of travel, lodging, and other dissertation research-related expenses. (Grant money may not be used for tuition, computer hardware, or meals.) This is a competitive program: applications will be reviewed by a jury of senior scholars appointed by the AAR President.

    Doctoral Study Fellowship
    The Doctoral Fellowship program invites Ph.D. or Th.D. students to consider theological education as their vocation. Up to ten Fellowships of $2,000 a year for two years will be offered. In addition, a colloquium of the ten Doctoral Fellows will meet three times during each fellowship year. Applicants must be Ph.D. or Th.D. students, currently in their first or second year of doctoral study in an accredited graduate program in the United States or Canada.

  • Lloyd and Iva Mattison Youth Ministry Scholarship
    Scholarship opportunity for seminarians preparing to serve the church in the area of ministry with youth | established for those preparing to serve the church in the area of ministry with youth.

    Grace LeGendre Fellowships
    Provides financial assistance to qualified women who are U.S. citizens and permanent New York state residents for graduate study at accredited New York state institutions.

    The American Association of University Women
    Fellowship and grant recipients perform research in a wide range of disciplines and work to improve their schools and communities. Their intellect, dedication, imagination, and effort promise to forge new paths in scholarship, improve the quality of life for all, and tackle the educational and social barriers facing women in the United States and around the globe.

    The Council of Graduate Schools
    Does not offer any financial assistance for graduate students, however, they have prepared a list of links to websites of individual funding sources.

    The United Methodist General Scholarship
    May be awarded to undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral students; must be full active members of the UMC for at least 1 year; have a minimum GPA of 2.5+, and be attending an accredited institution within the U.S.
