Community-Engaged Clinical Ethics at Montefiore Medical Center

This collaborative project with Montefiore Einstein’s Center for Bioethics aims to ensure that hospital ethics consultation and mediation practices are informed by the needs and values of the Bronx community. Montefiore’s Center for Bioethics is a national leader in clinical ethics consultation. The Bronx is one of the most racially and ethnically diverse counties in the nation, while also the lowest ranking county in the state for health factors and health outcomes. Standard practices in clinical ethics consultation may not fit the profile of this unique community. Through community-drive initiatives, this project will empower Bronx residents in complex medical contexts and enable the Center for Bioethics to facilitate clinical decision-making that meets community needs.

Dr. Laura Specker Sullivan

Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Fordham University | Laura Specker Sullivan received her Ph.D. at the University of Hawaii, focusing on informed consent in Japan. She is an assistant Assistant Professor of Philosophy. She specializes in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural ethics and incorporates her experience in clinical ethics consultation and qualitative research into her philosophical work.

Dr. Elizabeth Chuang

Director, Montefiore Einstein Center for Bioethics; Associate Professor of Medicine Albert Einstein College of Medicine | Dr. Chuang is the Dr. Shoshanah Trachtenberg Frackman Faculty Scholar in Biomedical Ethics and Director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Bioethics. She is also an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she contributes to advancing ethical practices in healthcare and medical education.
