Integrated English Skills This course will help you improve all four main language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) by thinking, discussing, comparing, and debating in English. You will read short stories, write complex sentences, give short presentations, and participate in discussions/debates. You will also experience the excitement of being an editor in NYC by developing your ideas and publishing them online. |
Fiction and Storytelling The course is designed to introduce techniques and terminologies for creative writing and explore the uses of language through various genres (fiction, comic strips, plays, children’s books, and poetry). Special emphasis is on presenting well-developed creative stories by incorporating idioms and vocabulary. |
NY Issues & Events Would you like to become an expert on what's going on in NY? This is an opportunity for you to explore current issues related to politics, cultures, faiths, and business in one of the most fascinating urban centers in the world. Special emphasis is on expressing opinions with precision and writing short essays or reports that systematically develop an argument and position. |
American Culture in Film When you watch movies, what do you enjoy the most: drama, action, comedy, or documentaries? Do you follow certain actors and musicians? Movies are reflections, celebrations, and sometimes critiques of culture. In this class, you will improve your writing, speaking, and listening skills through an examination of various films that are essential to understanding American culture. Special emphasis is on writing reflections and sharing comments while understanding idiomatic language as well as recognizing different interpretations in selected scenes. Enjoying the movies is a bonus! Offered for 7 weeks. |
Service Learning Project Do you want to make a positive impact on society? The course encourages student engagement in the local community through volunteer opportunities. Special emphasis is on promoting greater awareness of issues in the United States concerning equity, class status, race, and nationality through service-learning experiences, readings, films, and discussions. |
