An international academic gathering of scholars, pastors, clinicians, and other expertstook place in Oxford from 16th to 19th August, at which contemporary issues of sex, gender, and sexuality were discussed in relation to the Orthodox Church. The ground-breaking meeting brought together a wide variety of views on highly controversial social issues confronting the 260-million strong Orthodox Christian community. 

The conference was supported by the British Council as part of the second iteration of its “Bridging Voices” project. It was organised by a consortium of scholars from the University of Exeter and the Orthodox Christian Studies Center at Fordham University.

Some fifty scholars gathered from across the globe. They brought a diversity of professional expertise and experience, and represented a range of academic disciplines including theology, philosophy, church history, and canon law, and fields within the natural and social sciences. Orthodox clergy from multiple jurisdictions, LGBTQ+ activists, and clinicians were in attendance. A small number of ecumenical observers from the Church of England and the Catholic Church also took part.

The goal of the meeting was neither to reach immediate consensus nor issue common statements but rather to stimulate dialogue among experts in order to help the Church discern responses to urgent pastoral needs that are both truthful and pastorally-sensitive. The meeting was strictly unofficial: all participants attended in a private capacity and the Church hierarchy was not involved in a formal capacity. This arrangement, together with strict observation of the Chatham House Rule, ensured that all participants could speak freely, without fear of misrepresentation.

Conference delegates participated in nine workshops. Topics included hermeneutic issues in scripture and tradition, theological anthropology, ethics, pastoral challenges, therapeutic approaches, and secularism and public policy. Each session included stimulus presentations followed by open discussion.

Views were heard from every perspective. Participants who strongly support, defend, and adhere to the traditional teachings and disciplines of the Orthodox Church spoke alongside those who find them somehow problematic—and many contributed perspectives along a continuum between these positions. A range of opinions and practical approaches were shown to exist already within the Church.

The genuine dialogue demonstrated deep respect for contrasting positions alongside a strong desire for co-operation and faithfulness to the Orthodox tradition. Full attention was given not only to the teachings and practices of the Church emerging from its pre-modern and Eastern consciousness but also to the need to address modern Western challenges which have come to dominate the modern world.

The gathering can serve as a model of how issues of sex, sexuality, and gender can be approached without the recriminations and polarization that too often characterize this discussion. Indeed, the conference is surely unique to date in world Orthodoxy in its achievement of creating a hospitable context in which all participants—conservative, progressive, and everything in between—could express themselves and be heard and seen in their full, complex humanity in process of drawing nearer to Christ.

Whatever their stances, conference participants agreed on a number of points: The dignity of all humans must always be respected. Violence must be excluded. Pastoral compassion is essential. Dialogue must continue, in the same respectful and gracioustone that characterized this gathering.

Международная научная конференция с участием ученых, священнослужителей, медиков и других экспертов прошла вОксфорде с 16 по 19 августа 2019 г. В рамках конференции рассматривались современные вопросы пола, гендера и сексуальности в контексте Православной Церкви. На не имеющем прецедентов мероприятии был представлен широкий спектр взглядов на крайне противоречивые социальные вопросы, с которыми сталкивается православное сообщество, насчитывающее в мире около 260 млн человек.

Конференция была организована благодаря поддержке Британского совета в рамках второго цикла проекта “Bridging Voices” («Объединяя голоса») группой профессоров Эксетерского университета и Центра изучения Православия Фордемского университета.

В конференции приняли участие около 50 специалистов со всего мира с широчайшим профессиональным опытом и знаниями, представляющих целый ряд научных дисциплин, среди которых богословие, философия, история Церкви, каноническое право, а также естественные и общественные науки. На конференции присутствовали также представители православного духовенства различных юрисдикций, активисты ЛГБТК+, практикующие врачи. Кроме того, за ходом конференции следило небольшое число экуменических наблюдателей, представляющих Церковь Англии и Католическую Церковь.

В задачи мероприятия не входили ни немедленное достижение консенсуса, ни публикация каких-либо совместных заявлений. Его цель была в стимулировании экспертного диалога, который призван помочь Церкви выработать ответы на острые пастырские вопросы и нужды, которые были бы одновременно верными учению Церкви и деликатными с точки зрения душепопечения.

Конференция носила исключительно неофициальный характер: все присутствующие участвовали как частные лица, а церковная иерархия не была представлена в формальном качестве. Данные условия вместе со строгим соблюдением правил конфиденциальности Чатем-Хаус создали такое пространство, в котором каждый участник могговорить свободно, не опасаясь возможных искажений в передаче информации.

В ходе конференции состоялось девять тематических сессий, посвященных таким вопросам, как проблемы герменевтики Писания и Предания, богословская антропология, этика, вызовы душепопечения, терапевтические подходы, секуляризм и государственная политика. Каждая сессия состояла из нескольких докладов и открытой дискуссии.

Высказывались самые различные взгляды: выступали как участники, которые категорически поддерживают и защищают традиционное учение и практикуПравославнойЦеркви и следуют им, так и те, кто видит в них определенные проблемы, а также и множество участников, чья позиция находится в спектре между этими двумя точками зрения. Как было показано в ходе дискуссии, внутри Церкви уже существует целый ряд мнений и практических подходов.

Состоявшемуся в рамках конференции подлинному диалогу были свойственны глубокое уважение к противоположным позициям и стремление к сотрудничеству и верности православной традиции. Внимание было уделено не только учению и практике Церкви, проистекающим из ее домодернистского и восточного самосознания, но также и необходимости найти ответы на вызовы западной цивилизации, с которыми повсеместно сталкивается современное общество.

Данная конференция может служить образцом того, как вопросы пола, сексуальности и гендера можно рассматривать без взаимных обвинений и поляризации, которые так часто сопутствуют подобным обсуждениям. На сегодняшний день конференция в Оксфорде является единственнымпримеромсоздания благоприятных условий, в которых все участники – консерваторы, либералы и все находящиеся между этими полюсами – могли высказываться и быть услышанными и увиденными во всей полноте и сложности человеческой личности на ее пути ко Христу.

Независимо от своих взглядов участники конференции согласились с несколькими утверждениями: необходимо при всех обстоятельствах уважать достоинство каждого человека; насилие должно быть прекращено; пастырское сочувствие имеет огромное значение; диалог должен быть продолжен – в том же духе взаимного уважения и милосердия, которым была отмечена данная конференция.

In perioada 16 – 19 august, a avut loc la Oxford o intalnire internationala formata din cercetatori, clerici, clinicieni si alți experti. La aceasta intalnire s-au discutat probleme contemporane legate de sex, identitate de gen si sexualitate, in legatura cu Biserica Ortodoxa. Aceasta intalnire deschizatoare de drumuri a adus impreuna o larga varietate de perspective in relatie cu aspecte sociale extrem de controversate cu care se confrunta cele peste 260 de milioane de crestini Ortodocsi din lume.

Conferinta a fost organizata cu sprijinul Consiliului Britanic (British Council), ca parte din cea de a doua ediție a proiectului “Pod pentru voci” (“Bridging Voices”). Conferinta a fost organizata de un consortiu de cercetatori de la Universitatea Exeter si de la Centrul de Studii Crestin Ortodoxe al Universitatii Fordham.

Au participat aproximativ cincizeci de cercetatori din lumea intrega. Acestia au adus o varietate de expertiza si experienta profesionala, reprezentand o larga paleta de discipline incluzand teologie, filozofie, istorie bisericeasca si drept canonic, precum si din domenii apartinand stiintelor naturale si sociale. In audienta au fost prezenti si clerici Ortodocsi apartinand mai multor jurisdictii, activisti LGBTQ+, precum si cadre medicale. Au luat parte si un numar restrains de observatori ecumenici din partea Bisericii Anglicane si Bisericii Romano-Catolice. 

Scopul intalnirii nu a fost nici atingerea unui consens imediat in legatura cu tema discutata, nici emiterea de declaratii comune, ci mai degraba stimularea dialogului intre experti, cu scopul de a ajuta Biserica sa discearna raspunsuri veridice dar si sensibile din punct de vedere pastoral, la probleme pastorale urgente. Intalnirea a fost strict ne-oficiala: toti participantii au fost prezenti in capacitate particulara si ierarhia bisericeasca nu a fost implicata intr-o maniera oficiala. Acest aranjament, impreuna cu stricta respectare a Regulii Chatham House, a asigurat ca toti participantii au putut vorbi liber, fara teama de a le fi denaturate opiniile. 

Delegatii de la conferinta au participat la noua sesiuni de lucru. Subiectele abordate au inclus: aspecte hermeneutice in Scriptura si Traditie, antropologie teologica, etica, provocari pastorale, perspective terapeutice, precum si secularism si politici publice. Fiecare sesiune a inclus prezentari menite sa stimuleze conversatia, urmate de discutii in plen.
Au fost auzite opinii din diferite perspective. Participanti care sprijina, apara, si adera energic la invatatura si disciplina traditionala a Bisericii Ortodoxe au vorbit alaturi de cei care le gasesc, intr-o anumita masura, problematice – cu multi dintre participanti aducand contributii care se incadreaza pe un spectru intre aceste doua pozitii. S-a dovedit ca deja exista in Biserica o multiplicitate de opinii si abordari practice in acest sens.

Dialogul sincer care a avut loc a demonstrat un profund respect pentru pozitii contrastante, impreuna cu o dorinta puternica de cooperare si fidelitate fata de traditia Ortodoxa. S-a acordat atentie deplina nu doar invataturilor si practicilor din Biserica care origineaza din perioada ei premoderna si din constiinta ei Rasariteana, dar si nevoii de a raspunde provocarilor moderne de origine Vestica care au ajuns sa domine lumea contemporana.

Aceasta adunare poate servi ca model despre cum pot fi abordate subiecte legate de sex, sexualitate, si identitate de gen, fara acuzatiile si polarizarea care prea des caracterizeaza aceasta discutie in ziua de azi. Intr-adevar, conferinta este cu siguranta unica in lumea Ortodoxa pana la ora actuala din punctul de vedere al crearii unui context ospitalier in care toti participantii – conservatori, progresisti, si orice intre – s-au putut exprima si au putut fi ascultati in deplinatatea umanitatii lor complexe, in drumul ei de apropiere de Hristos.  

Indiferent de pozitiile lor, participantii la conferinta au cazut de acord asupra unui numar de idei: Demnitatea tuturor persoanelor umane trebuie intotdeauna respectata. Violenta trebuie respinsa. Compasiunea pastorala este esentiala. Dialogul trebuie sa continue in aceasi nota de respect si bunavointa care a caracterizat aceasta intalnire.
