African & African American Studies Curriculum

Students who major in African & African American studies must complete a minimum requirement of nine one-semester courses offered by the department on the Lincoln Center or Rose Hill campuses.

Students who minor in African & African American Studies must complete a minimum requirement of six one-semester courses offered by the department on the Lincoln Center or Rose Hill campuses.

Study Abroad

African & African American studies majors should consider the possibility of studying abroad during their junior year, possible through the University study abroad office. Such a program will give them an extremely valuable perspective on Africa and its diaspora, and at the same time will enrich their understanding of the history and culture of their host society.

The African Studies Minor

The interdisciplinary minor provides unique opportunities for Fordham students to develop a level of expertise in African socio-political history, sociology, economics, among others; learn African languages; meet with Africa’s permanent representatives at the UN; and interact with and network among the diverse African population present in the city. This minor also provides a background for careers in government, business, law, foreign service, academia, humanitarian agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

And proficiency through the intermediate level in a language spoken on the African continent other than English, such as Swahili, Twi, Zulu, Arabic, Spanish, or French. For more information on our African Studies minor, please refer to our Minor in African Studies section.

Foreign Languages

Students pursuing a minor in African studies can also fulfill the language requirement by selecting language courses that have been cross-listed by the department. This includes French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic; or another language approved by the director of African Studies.
