Art History Internships
Art History Internships
We encourage Art History students to take advantage of the wealth of art-world internship opportunities available in New York City. Some internships earn students college credits. Some internships are paid. Getting set up in an internship requires initiative and professionalism on the part of the student, providing excellent preparation for the post-graduation job search. Art History faculty will mentor and guide students through the internship experience, ensuring opportunities for intellectual and personal growth.
INTERNSHIPS as TUTORIAL – for College Credit
What it is:
- Student seeks out an internship on their own at a gallery, museum, auction house, or other art institution in New York City.
- Students usually earn 1 college credit for an internship, but in special cases, the student can take on more work and earn up to 4 credits.
- PLEASE NOTE: Students must have a minimum of 60 completed academic credits and a GPA of 3.0 or above.
What to do:
- Student researches and explores possibilities for internships. We recommend that the student seeks guidance on resumé design and cover letter writing from Fordham’s Career Services Center. Students also should seek guidance from other students and faculty as they consider which institutions to approach.
- Once an offer for an internship is made, the student contacts the Assistant Dean for their class year and sets up a meeting about the internship opportunity. Here is the info for the Assistant Deans for each class at FCRH and at FCLC.
- Once the student has met with the Assistant Dean for their class, the student makes an appointment with an Art History faculty member, asking if they will sponsor an Independent Study connected to the internship.
- Then the faculty member and student determine the number of College Credits the student will earn and schedule regular meetings and work accordingly.
- Then the faculty member, acting as “sponsor,” fills out the Application for Undergraduate Tutorial Form, to be submitted to the Office of the Dean for the appropriate college – either FCRH or FCLC.
