General Fellowships
Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Innovation Fellowship
Dissertation research only. Intended for early stage dissertation writing. 9 month to
1 year. Must have completed all required coursework by the start of the fellowship.
Must have not advanced to PhD candidacy (ABD) prior to the starting year of the
fellowship.
Dissertation research only. International. 4 to 9 months of funding at a French
university. No knowledge of French is required. Intended for graduate students in the
dissertation writing phase of their degree.
Berlin Program Dissertation Fellowship
Dissertation research only. International. 10 months to 1 year of funding to
research at the Freie Universität Berlin. Must be ABD by the beginning of the
fellowship. Must have some level of German language competence.
University Center for Human Values
Dissertation research only. Located in Princeton University. 12 months of funding.
Must be ABD, and research must involve “the critical study of human values.”
International. 8 months of funding. Must be a graduate student interested in researching or teaching at a university in Canada.
International. Database of awards/fellowships. More often than not, it is expected that research takes place in a different country. Consult the Award Search to narrow search results.
International. 2 to 12 months of support for research at a German university. Must
be working in German philosophy or must be interested in conducting research at a
German university. One’s research project does not necessarily need to be a
dissertation. Knowledge of German is often, but not always, required. DAAD offers
an array of more specific fellowships/awards on their scholarship database.
AOS-Specific Fellowships
Charlotte Newcombe Dissertation Completion Fellowship
Dissertation research only. 1 year. Must be ABD by the application deadline. Must
expect to complete the dissertation in the same year as the fellowship. Must be
working in something related to “religion, ethics, values, or morals.”
American Society of Aesthetics Dissertation Completion Fellowship
Dissertation research only. Must be working in aesthetics (construed as “the
philosophical study of art, criticism, each of the arts, and related phenomena”). Must
expect to complete the dissertation by the end of the fellowship.
Harry Frank Guggenheim Emerging Scholar Awards
Dissertation research only. 1 year of funding. Must expect to complete dissertation
by the end of the fellowship. Intended for those working on something pertaining to
“the causes, manifestations, and control of violence” broadly construed.
AAUW American Dissertation Fellowship
Dissertation research only. 1 year of funding. Must identify as a woman and be
ABD. It is preferred that one’s dissertation relate to gender issues.
The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Dissertation Fellowships in Buddhist Studies
Dissertation research only. 10 months of funding. Must be ABD. Research must
pertain to Buddhism or Buddhist Philosophy.
Center for Ethics at the University of Toronto
International. Dissertation research only. 1 academic year of funding at the
University of Toronto Center for Ethics. Must have a dissertation related to ethics,
broadly construed.
The Carter G. Woodson Institute Predoctoral
Dissertation research only. 2 year fellowship for those whose work focuses on
African-American and African Studies, as well as related fields. Must be ABD.
Located at the University of Virginia.
U.S. Holocaust Museum Annual Fellowship
Dissertation research only. 2, 4, or 8 month fellowship. Must be ABD, and must
have a dissertation related to the Holocaust or related topics.
Mitchem Dissertation Fellowship Program
Dissertation research only. 1 year of an in-residence fellowship at Marquette
University. Intended for those who specialize in philosophy of race.
American Scandinavian Foundation
Short term fellowship (1-3 months of funding). It is preferred, but not required, that
the applicant is in the process of writing their dissertation. Must be working on
philosophy/philosophers from the Nordic region (Denmark, Greenland, Faroe
Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sápmi, and Sweden).

General Fellowships
Michigan Society of Fellows Post-Doc
3 year fellowship. Must have received PhD prior to the start date of the postdoc.
Harvard Society of Fellows Post-Doc
3 year fellowship. Must have received PhD prior to the start date of the postdoc.
Princeton Society of Fellows Post-Doc
3 year fellowships. Several types of postdoctoral fellowships offered. Must either
have received PhD (or can be ABD in certain circumstances) prior to the start of
the fellowship.
The Society of Fellows and Heyman Center for the Humanities at Columbia University
1 year fellowship at Columbia. Renewable for 2-3 years. PhD received in the last 4
years.
University of Chicago Society of Fellows Post-Doc
4 year fellowship. Must have received PhD prior to the start date of the postdoc.
Wolf Humanities Center at the University of Pennsylvania
1 year postdoctoral fellowship. Must have received PhD at most 5 years prior to the
start of the fellowship. Theme varies by year.
Cornell University Society of Fellows Post-Doc
1 year fellowship. Theme varies by year.
Berlin Program Postdoctoral Fellowship
International. 10-12 months. Must have received doctorate within two years
before the start of the postdoc. Also see the more specialized Max Kade Berlin
Fellowships.
Fulbright Post-Doctoral Awards
International. Database of postdocs. More often than not, it is expected that research takes place in a different country. Details vary.
International. 6-24 month fellowship in Germany. Must have received PhD within 4 years prior to the start of the postdoc.
1 year academic fellowship. Academic themes vary by year.
1 academic year postdoc. Must have received PhD within the last 4 years.

AAUW Postdoctoral Leave Research Fellowship
1 year postdoc. Must identify as a woman. It is preferred that one’s dissertation
relate to gender issues.
The Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women
1 year postdoc at Brown University. Theme varies by year. Must specialize in work
related to women and/or gender.
NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship
Must have received doctorate at most 4 years before the start of the postdoc. One’s
research must pertain to education (philosophy of education, pedagogical theory,
etc.).
The Center for Philosophy of Science Postdoctoral Fellowship
Located within the University of Pittsburgh. Must have had doctorate awarded at
most 5 years prior to the start of the fellowship. Must be working on the philosophy
of science.
Rutgers Center for the Philosophy of Religion
Offers two postdoctoral fellowships on a semi-regular basis. Consult Fordham
Prof. Stephen Grimm or Prof. Brian Davies (both External Affiliates of the Center)
for more details.
Center for Philosophy of Religion at Notre Dame
1 year postdoc. Must be working in philosophy of religion. NB: the Center has a
“theme” that varies by year.
Center for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Brown
1 year, renewable for a second. PhD must have been received at most 3 years prior
to the fellowship start date.
University Center for Human Values at Princeton
1 year postdoc Must be working in moral philosophy, broadly construed.
Centre for Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs
International. Affiliated with University of St. Andrews. 1 or 2 semester long
fellowship. Must work in philosophy related to ethics or public affairs, broadly
construed.
Center for Ethics at the University of Toronto
International. 1 academic year of funding at the University of Toronto Center for
Ethics. Must specialize in work related to ethics, broadly construed. Must have
received PhD at most 5 years prior to the start of the fellowship.
2 year postdoctoral fellowship. Must work in ethics, broadly construed.
McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society
Affiliated with Stanford University. Must work in ethics, broadly construed. Must
have received PhD at most 3 years prior to fellowship start date.
The Center for Hellenistic Studies
Affiliated with Harvard University. Must have received PhD in “Classics or related
field.” Must specialize in work related to ancient Greek civilization, broadly
construed.
The Carter G. Woodson Institute Postdoc
2 year postdoc fellowship for those whose work focuses on African-American and
African Studies, as well as related fields. Located at the University of Virginia.
1 year fellowship at St. Olaf College. Can be ABD or postdoc. Must specialize in Kierkegaard.
1 year postdoc, affiliated with Harvard University. Must have received doctorate at
most 3 years prior to the start of the fellowship. Must work in the environmental
humanities, broadly construed.
Medieval Institute at the University of Notre Dame
Multiple postdoctoral fellowships offered. 1 or 2 year appointment length. Must
have work in Medieval Studies, broadly construed.
The Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities
International. Located in the University of Edinburgh. Theme varies by year.
