Summer Language Programs
Fordham Faculty Tutors
Languages Offered: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish
Overview: Fordham’s Language Center offers tutoring services for graduate students. All tutors
are paid by the university and the service is therefore free for graduate students. All tutors are
Fordham professors who have experience teaching and translating at an academic level.
Middlebury
Languages Offered: Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Italian, Abenaki, Chinese, Hebrew,
Japanese, Russian, Portuguese, Korean
Overview: Middlebury Language Schools are immersion-based programs ranging from 2 to 8
weeks. Beginner and advanced levels offered. There are need-based aid and merit-based
scholarships internal to the program. Important dates here. $75 application fee.
DAAD
Languages Offered: German
Overview: DAAD is an academic exchange service which offers various fellowships for research
and language courses. The list of language courses can be found here. Beginner and advanced
levels offered. Note that fellowships and scholarships only apply to some of the courses.
Application deadlines vary.
Goethe Institut
Languages Offered: German
Overview: The Goethe Institut offers online and in-person language courses. Location and course
start-date are flexible. There do not appear to be internal funding opportunities.
Campus France
Languages Offered: French
Overview: Campus France is a database that compiles various summer programs in France.
Institut de Langue et de Culture Françaises
Languages Offered: French
Overview: The ILCF in Lyon offers intensive French language courses in July, August, and
September. Courses are between 1 and 3 months long. Beginner and advanced courses offered.

Latin/Greek Institute at the CUNY Graduate Center
Languages Offered: Latin and Ancient Greek
Overview: The Latin/Greek Institute is a full-time, immersion-based program that 10-week
courses in basic and advanced Latin or Greek. The institute offers some internal scholarships,
found here. The application deadlines for 2025 have not yet been released, but the 2024 deadlines
were in mid-March.
Critical Language Scholarship
Languages Offered: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese,
Russian, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu
Overview: The Critical Language Scholarship offers $5,000 for a 7-10 week long
immersion-based program in a host country. No prior language experience is required.
Princeton University Graduate Summer Language Reading Program
Languages Offered: French, German, Italian (varies by year), Latin (varies by year)
Overview: The program is explicitly designed for graduate students and is entirely virtual. For the
2024 program, the course fee was $1,000.
Kierkegaard Summer Institute
Languages Offered: Danish
Overview: The institute offers a 4 week summer course focused on Kierkegaard’s Danish. The
course fee is $600.
University of Granada Summer Schools
Languages Offered: Spanish
Overview: Up to 5 week immersion program in Granada, Spain. Internal scholarships of up to
$1,000. To fully cover costs, external funding would be required.
CUNY Language Reading Program
Languages Offered: Spanish, French, German, Italian
Overview: The program offers ‘level one’ and ‘level two’ courses during the Fall, Spring, and
Summer. Summer registration and dates are posted in Spring. To cover costs, consider Fordham’s
Summer Research Fellowship.
Instituto Hemingway
Languages Offered: Spanish
Overview: The institute offers basic and advanced courses year round. Costs are comparatively
low, but no internal funding is offered.

Fordham Student Support Grants
Activities Supported: Research, Language, etc.
Overview: Student Support Grants award up to $2,000 for conference participation, research, or
alternative learning experiences. One may propose a language course or language immersion
program as an alternative learning experience. Consult the SSG Fact Sheet for more information.
NB: In principle, Student Support Grants can be used for language training. However, SSGs
often demand ardent justification. One ought to explain and justify that the fluency/training
needed for the target language cannot be satisfied by Fordham’s current of erings. Consult
examples of previously funded SSG proposals here.
Fordham Campion Institute Fellowships
Activities Supported: Research, Language Courses, Teaching, etc.
Overview: The Campion Institute Fellowship is internal to Fordham and is intended to provide
funding for students (undergraduate and graduate) who have applied for external fellowships.
This fellowship is ideal for programs that do not provide funding.
Fulbright
Activities Supported: Research, Teaching
Overview: The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers many types of fellowships across several
countries (including internal to the U.S.). For doctoral students, it seems that most fellowships are
intended for those in advanced research stages (i.e., dissertation). Fulbright also supports
language courses for Arabic, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Urdu, Bahasa
Indonesia, Mandarin Chinese.
DAAD
Activities Supported: Research, Language Courses
Overview: DAAD offers a Scholarship Database for research opportunities in Germany. Award
types vary, but most research-based scholarships are intended for advanced research stages. For
information about DAAD language courses, see above.
Campus France
Activities Supported: Research, Immersion Experiences
Overview: Like DAAD, Campus France functions as a database for research and funding
opportunities in France. Some fellowships are explicitly intended for research, but it seems that
others are intended for a more general interest in French language, culture, and literature (in
which we can include philosophy). For information specifically on summer programs, see above.
Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies
Activities Supported: Research
Overview: The program is hosted by The Freie Universität Berlin and is intended to support
dissertation or post-doc research for up to one year. The application is open to anyone working in
the social sciences or the humanities.
Sigma Delta Pi Graduate Research Grants
Activities Supported: Research
Overview: The SDP Graduate Research Grants are intended to support graduate student research
involving “learning or teaching of Spanish language, linguistics, and/or Hispanic literature,
culture, film or media.” NB: to be eligible, one must be a member of Sigma Delta Pi.
