James Dean Palmer is a director, deviser, producer, and educator based in New York City. James has worked with companies across the country including Roundabout Theatre, Mabou Mines, Long Wharf, The Old Globe, Steppenwolf Theatre, Chautauqua Theatre, Asolo Repertory Theatre, The Texas Shakespeare Festival, and The Goodman Theatre among others. As an educator, James has taught and directed at Fordham University, NYU Tisch (Playwrights Horizons and Meisner School), the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan, Trinity Repertory Company, Asolo/FSU, and SUNY Purchase among others. James was the founding artistic director of Chicago’s award-winning Red Tape Theatre, an experimental theatre committed to new work and new models of producing. During his eight year tenure the company fostered the work of playwrights and directors including Martyna Majok, Will Davis, Erik Hoff, Seth Bokely, Martín Zimmerman, A. Zell Williams, Caitlin Parrish, and many others. Red Tape produced the Chicago premieres of works by Young Jean Lee, George Brant, Jennifer Barclay, and Ruth Margraff. James serves on the Artistic Advisory Board of The Coop Theatre. He’s received fellowships from The Drama League, Chautauqua Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, SDC, and he is a Peter Kaplan fellow. James served on the Board of Directors of the League of Chicago Theaters and the Vestry at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. In 2010 he received a Joseph Jefferson award for best direction of The Love of the Nightingale by Timberlake Wertenbaker. James has trained in anti-racist pedagogies with Art Equity and Be The Change and worked closely with Waterwell and PPAS on decolonizing the curriculum and instituting a restorative justice approach to classroom management.
