Prevention Strategies
Instructors can reduce the incidence of cheating or academic dishonesty by paying specific attention to how they communicate their expectations to their students, as well as how they build and administer their exams or assessments.
Some prevention strategies include:
- Include information about Fordham’s Academic Integrity Policy, the reasons academic integrity is valued, and the consequences of violations in the class syllabus.
- Require students to sign a statement acknowledging awareness of academic integrity and stating their work is original.
- Assess students frequently, offer opportunities for revising and retaking low-stakes assessments, and use ungraded self-assessments.
- Provide prompt feedback.
- Collaborate with students to determine the weight of assignments in the course overall.
- Offer multiple means for demonstrating mastery of the material – presentation, exam, or paper.
