Faculty Research Abroad Program 2025

The Fordham University Faculty Research Abroad Program (FRAP) 2025 is designed to facilitate the development of research collaborations between Fordham University and international Jesuit or other universities.

This initiative is an individual or small group faculty-led research program. Participating faculty are expected to travel abroad in person. The program will select 10 to 15 Fordham faculty to participate in the program in spring or summer of 2025. The application guidelines are noted below.

I.   Eligibility and Application Procedures

1.  Applicants must be tenured or tenure-track faculty members at Fordham.

2.  Interested faculty applicants must submit:

*  application form (https://form.jotform.com/242104963012142)

*  a research project abstract (up to 500 words) with four to five keywords to be used to search for funding opportunities; and

*  a two-page CV. 

3.  The research project subjects may vary but the preference will be given to topics with a focus on Jesuit educational principles, climate change and climate justice, democracy and civil discourse, generative AI, and immigration. 

4.  Applicants are required to identify their research partners at one of the international Jesuit universities or non-Jesuit universities abroad and should submit a letter of support from the research partner.

5.  All participating faculty are expected to develop joint research projects such as grant proposals, research papers, and/or research presentations.

6.  All participants are required to deliver public presentations at the Fordham research forum designed to showcase their international research collaborations in Fall 2025 or Spring 2026.

7.  The Office of Research will work with Fordham University Research Council to organize a review committee to evaluate and select participants based on the criteria of their projects’ feasibility, deliverability, and sustainability.

8.  Priority will be given to the applicants working with international research partners at Jesuit universities or entities linked to Fordham University through current agreements. However, the program will consider applications focused on collaboration with other Jesuit universities and non-Jesuit universities that do not appear on the list below. Please see the appendix for the list of international Jesuit universities and entities having active agreements in place with Fordham University and the link to the International Association of Jesuit Universities (https://iaju.org/members) for a current member list.

9.  Applicants are eligible to receive funding up to three times in five years.

All applicants must submit their 1) application form, 2) research project abstract, and 3) CV no later than October 21, 2024.

II.  Financial Support and Regulations

1.  The Office of Research will provide approximately $3,000 to each selected Fordham faculty member as a travel reimbursement via Fordham’s Concur platform.

2.  The selected faculty members will be individually responsible for their international travel arrangements such as, and not limited to, airfare, lodging, meals, passport, visa, international health insurance, immunizations, and other incidental out-of-pocket expenses.

3.  All Fordham participants are required to register their travel through the University’s International Travel Registry and follow the export control requirements prior to departure.

4.  Faculty members who will have received three months' summer salary funded from an external grant in 2025 are not eligible to apply for the program taking place during the summer.

III. Program Management and Facilitation

1.  The Program will be managed by the Fordham Office of Research. 

2.  The Office of Research will organize the research forum in Fall 2025 or Spring 2026.

    We are pleased to announce the second annual Fordham University Faculty Research Abroad Program (FRAP) designed to facilitate the development of research collaborations between Fordham University (Fordham) and overseas scholars. Fordham will work with Birkbeck, University of London (http://www.bbk.ac.uk/) in London, U.K., to implement the 2019 FRAP program, which is scheduled to be held from June 2 to 7, 2019. The major goals of the proposed program are to:

    1. Organize an international symposium on digital scholarship at the Fordham London Centre;
    2. Conduct research field trips investigating digital scholarship and joint institutional research collaborations in the UK; and
    3. Develop and submit joint grant proposals to American, British and European foundations.

    The 2019 FRAP will select a maximum of 15 Fordham faculty, staff, and doctoral students. The competition is open to Fordham staff and doctoral students, but the applicants' supervising departments must provide partial funding to cover expenses. The application guidelines are noted below.

    I. Eligibility and Application Procedures

    Faculty applicants must be tenured or tenure-track faculty at Fordham. Fordham staff and doctoral student applicants must be principal investigators or an essential part of Fordham faculty applicants' digital projects leading to conference papers, publications, scholarly website, or pedagogy projects. Doctoral student applicants must be current, full-time, and degree-seeking students through August 2019 who are in good academic standing and having met their school's satisfactory academic progress norms.

    1. Interested applicants must submit:
      • an online application form https://form.jotform.com/82694911513157
      • a one-page research forum presentation abstract (up to 250 words) with 4 to 5 keywords to be used in search for funding opportunities; and
      • a two-page curriculum vitae.
    2. The one-page presentation abstract should describe a proposed collaborative project that incorporates digital scholarship in disciplines and subject areas that include humanities, social sciences, sciences, technology studies, and area studies.

      Broadly, digital scholarship encompasses the use of digital technologies to advance methods of inquiry and scholarly communication, as well as research on digital technology and media. The research of digital scholarship should include one of the following components:
      • Interrogating theoretical and critical approaches to digital scholarship
      • Data visualization and analysis, including methods such as topic modeling
      • Mapping, Geographic Information System (GIS) and spatial studies
      • Network analysis
      • Text encoding
      • Virtual and augmented reality
      • Digital performing arts analysis
      • Annotation and social annotation methods
      • Sound studies
      • 3D modeling/visualization
      • Smart urbanism and smart cities
      • Online platforms for archival content
      • Educational technology and hybrid learning
      • Cyber security and digital networks
      • Web scraping
      • Data ethics/data justice.
    3. Both Fordham University Office of Research and Birkbeck, University of London will assist participating Fordham faculty, staff, and doctoral students in identifying research partners at Birkbeck or its affiliates in the wider University of London community, and in identifying proper funding opportunities prior to the trip.     4. Communication between the research partners must occur before the trip. Research proposals should contemplate not a one-time collaboration but a continuing and long-term project.
    5. All participating faculty, staff, and doctoral students are expected to develop joint research projects, such as grant proposals, research papers, and/or research presentations within six months after the trip.
    6. The Office of Research will work with the University Research Council to organize a review committee to evaluate and select applications based on the criteria of 1) feasibility, 2) deliverability, and 3) sustainability.

    II. Responsibilities

    1. Birkbeck, University of London will be responsible for organizing a research field trip, a round table meeting, and a welcome reception/dinner for all Fordham participants during their stay in London. It is likely to include partial attendance at a large digital humanities conference being organized by the School for Advanced Study (SAS) at the University of London, being held from June 6-7, 2019. Birkbeck will also be responsible for symposium registration for non-Fordham participants.
    2. Fordham's Office of Research will support up to 10 Fordham faculty, covering the cost of international airfare, lodging, and group meals in London.
    3. Fordham's Office of Research will support up to 5 Fordham staff and doctoral students, covering the cost of lodging and group meals in London.
    4. The Fordham London Centre will provide conference rooms, facilities, and logistical service for the symposium.
    5. Each Fordham faculty participant will be responsible for paying: international airfare costs in excess of $600; local transportation costs to and from the US-based airport; local transportation costs from the airport to the hotel in London; individual meals while in transit to and from the United States and in London; and costs associated with obtaining a passport, international health insurance, immunizations, and other incidental expenses.
    6. Each Fordham staff or doctoral student participant will be responsible for paying the full cost of their international airfare; local transportation costs to and from the US-based airport; local transportation costs from the airport to the hotel in London; individual meals while in transit to and from the United States and in London; and costs associated with obtaining a passport, international health insurance, immunizations, and other incidental expenses. Staff and doctoral student applicants are strongly encouraged to secure funding for the balance of the travel costs from their departments and units.
    7. All Fordham participants are required to register their travel through the University's Travel Registry prior to departure.

    III. Program Management and Facilitation

    1. FRAP is managed and facilitated by the Office of Research at Fordham.
    2. The Office of Research will organize pre-trip and post-trip workshops to improve understanding of the FRAP and promote global research collaborations.

    June 3: Campus Tour, Roundtable Meeting and Welcome Reception at Birkbeck

Fordham will work with Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan to implement this inaugural program scheduled for May 21 to May 28, 2018.

    The major goals of the proposed inaugural program are to:

    1. Organize an international research forum on comparative urban sustainability at Sophia University;
    2. Conduct research field trips investigating urban sustainability issues in Japan; and
    3. Develop joint grant proposals to submit to both American and Japanese foundations.

    The FRAP will select a maximum of 10 Fordham faculty members to participate in the program. The application guidelines are noted below.

    I. Eligibility and Application Procedures

    1. Applicants must be tenured or tenure-track faculty at Fordham.
    2. Interested applicants must submit:
      • an application form;
      • a one-page research forum presentation abstract (up to 250 words) with 4 to 5 keywords to be used to search for funding opportunities; and
      • a two-page resume.
    3. The one-page presentation abstract should focus on one of the following subjects. Demonstrate expertise in the area of and/or propose a collaborative project on:

    4. All Fordham participants are required to register their travel through the University's Travel Registry prior to departure.
