Junior Registration: Subject Specifics

Public Accounting (120-credit) and Public Accountancy (150-credit)

  • You must complete ACBU 2222 - Financial Accounting and ACBU 2223 - Managerial Accounting before starting any upper-level accounting course. These two courses are typically completed in sophomore year.
  • If you are out of sequence but still want to pursue the accounting major, you can catch up by taking a course during the summer after junior year. More information on summer classes can be found at www.fordham.edu/summer.
  • You must complete Intermediate Financial Acct 1 before Intermediate Financial Acct 2.
  • You must complete Intermediate Financial Acct 2 before Assurance and Auditing.
  • You must complete Intermediate Financial Acct 2 before Advanced Concepts in Fin. Acct.
  • You must complete Assurance and Auditing before Advanced Assurance and Auditing.
  • Adv. Assurance and Auditing satisfies your globalism requirement.

Applied Accounting and Finance

  • You must complete ACBU 2222 - Financial Accounting and ACBU 2223 - Managerial Accounting before starting any upper-level accounting course. These two courses are typically completed in sophomore year.
  • You must complete Intermediate Financial Acct 1 before Intermediate Financial Acct 2.

  • Ethics in Financial Reporting and Accounting or Global Investments satisfy your globalism requirement.

Accounting Information Systems

Finance

  • You must complete Financial Management - FNBU 3221 before any upper-level finance courses.
  • There are THREE required courses, THREE chosen courses, and FOUR electives for the finance major. Please review DegreeWorks (“what if”) for details.
  • You must complete Investments Security Analysis before starting Global Investments, Futures and Options, or Portfolio Management.
  • Finance majors are permitted to take up to two economics electives to fulfill major requirements; however, only one course may count toward both the major and an economics minor.
    • You must complete Basic Microeconomics and Basic Macroeconomics before starting any 3000-level economics course.
    • You must complete Money and Banking first if you wish to take Monetary Policy.
  • If you choose to pursue a secondary finance concentration in Alternative Investments, Fintech, or Value Investing, the three classes required for those concentrations will use three of the four major electives for the finance major.
  • Global Investments or Student Managed Investment Fund 2 satisfy your globalism requirement.

Information Systems

  • You must complete Information Systems 1 and Information Systems 2 before any upper-level information systems course.
  • There are SIX required courses and FOUR electives required for the information systems major. Please review DegreeWorks (“what if”) for details.
  • Global IT Strategy satisfies your globalism requirement.

Marketing

  • You must complete Marketing Principles (MKBU 3225) before starting upper-level marketing courses.
  • It is recommended that you complete Marketing Research and/or Consumer Behavior immediately after Marketing Principles.
  • Some marketing electives are cross-listed by two departments: marketing and another department. (For example: Consumer Behavior is listed under marketing as well as under psychology.) Make sure you register for the marketing section/course number if you intend to major in marketing.
  • Marketing majors must take one “marketing-related liberal arts elective,” which is a course from a Fordham College department that complements the marketing area, such as psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology, visual arts, communication, or economics.
  • Marketing majors must take one “marketing-related business elective,” which could be another marketing course or another area’s business course that complements marketing, such as Web App Development, Venture Capital, or Personal Leadership.
  • If you choose to pursue a secondary marketing concentration in Marketing Analytics, Strategic Branding, or Services Marketing, the three classes required for those concentrations will use two marketing elective requirements and one marketing related business elective requirement for the marketing major.
  • Global Marketing satisfies your globalism requirement.

Business Administration and its Primary Concentrations

  • The Business Administration major was created to allow students to study multiple areas of business and liberal arts, instead of focusing on only one area through a full major.
  • Business Administration does not have any specific coursework attached to it. Instead, students pair this major with one or more primary or secondary concentrations and/or minors.

Accounting Primary Concentration

  • All accounting students must complete TWO required courses and TWO electives.
  • Required accounting courses:
    • Intermediate Financial Accounting 1
    • Intermediate Financial Accounting 2

  • You must complete Intermediate Financial Acct 1 before Intermediate Financial Acct 2.

Business Economics Primary Concentration

  • All business economics students must complete TWO required courses and TWO electives.

    • Macroeconomic Analysis
    • Microeconomic Theory

Entrepreneurship Primary Concentration

  • All entrepreneurship students must complete THREE required courses plus ONE elective.
  • Required entrepreneurship courses:
    • Exploring Entrepreneurship
    • Innovation and Resilience
    • Executing the Entrepreneurial Vision
  • Electives for entrepreneurship are cross-listed with many other areas of business. Selections change each semester. Please check with your class dean.

Finance Primary Concentration

  • All finance students must complete TWO required courses and TWO electives.
  • Required finance courses:
    • Corporate Financial Policy
    • Investments and Security Analysis
  • Electives for finance can be found in the “look up classes & registration” area of Banner Self-Service Applications on the “Student” tab of My Apps tab at the top of your screen (desktop view) or the hamburger menu icon (tablet/mobile view) under GSB Finance.
  • Investments and Security Analysis is the prerequisite for some upper-level finance electives, such as Global Investments, Portfolio Management, and Futures and Options.

Information Systems Primary Concentration

  • All information systems students must complete TWO required courses and TWO electives.
  • Required information systems courses:

    • Systems Analysis

  • You may complete electives in the area of information systems prior to completing the required courses.

Management Concentration

  • All management students must complete FOUR electives.

Marketing Concentration

  • All marketing students must complete ONE required course and THREE electives.

Secondary Concentrations

  • The accounting secondary concentration requires ANY THREE accounting electives.
  • The alternative investments secondary concentration requires TWO required classes and ONE elective.

      • Real Estate Finance
      • Private Equity
      • Venture Capital
        *NOTE: Futures and Options is highly recommended as a pre- or co-requisite to the Hedge Funds course.
    • The business economics secondary concentration requires ANY THREE economics electives.
      • Note: three economics electives are also required to earn an economics minor. Therefore, Gabelli School students are encouraged to minor using liberal arts electives, rather than to pursue a secondary concentration that uses business electives and free electives.
    • The communications and media management secondary concentration requires ANY THREE communications and media management (business communication) electives.
    • Entrepreneurship may only be studied as a primary concentration.
    • The finance secondary concentration requires ANY THREE finance electives.
    • The secondary concentration in global business requires THREE globally oriented courses in addition to demonstrated foreign-language proficiency, international experience of a minimum standard, and membership in the International Business Association, a student club.
