GSAS Examples of Eligible and Ineligible Expenses

Note: This is not an exhaustive list of eligible or ineligible expenses covered by the
fund. The University retains the right to determine a “compelling need.”

Unanticipated expenses related to visas  
Temporary housing due to displacement
(fire, flood, unsafe living conditions, threat of personal violence or other harassment)
Routine rent and utilities; moving expenses
Change of locks or replacement of essential items (e.g. clothing, books, computer) due to theft Replacement of laptop or other technology due to damage or negligence
Travel costs relating to unexpected family crises or death Travel home for non-emergency situations, conference attendance, or other personal travel
Immediate food assistance for sudden food-insecurity Non-essential purchases or luxury items
Assistance with sudden loss of transportation due to auto theft or accident Routine auto maintenance or repairs unrelated to theft or accident
  University-related costs (e.g. tuition); parking tickets or other fines;  veterinary bills; union dues
