Trauma-informed Health Care When You're Not "Doing Therapy"

Trauma-informed care is more than just the newest catch phrase: it’s a paradigmatic shift away from delineating the traumas themselves, and aids the clinician in focusing on a person having traumatic responses. In healthcare, where long-term trauma therapy is not often the focus of work, helping clinicians better understand how trauma-informed care can help them provide better, more attuned and more regulating interventions, no matter how short the session time (or even if you’re sitting on a patient’s bedside commode for the meeting). The role of trauma-informed stabilization and psychoeducation in healthcare will be explored. Recognizing how our bodies respond to adversity, and how this manifests in and is impacted by the experience of illness and healthcare, can better inform targeted, short-term interventions and crisis work. 

The class is experiential and may be evocative, and requires focused, active participation and reflection.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Social workers who take this course will be able to:

1. Explain the basic tenets of somatic trauma paradigms as they relate to serious illness and caregiving. 
2. Describe symptoms of traumatic responses in patients
3. Identify three interventions appropriate for bedside or outpatient intervention

Abigail Nathanson, DSW, LCSW, APHSW-C, ACS

Abigail Nathanson is a trauma therapist and a palliative social worker. Dr. Nathanson is also part-time faculty at New York University Silver School of Social Work, where she teaches Grief, Loss & Bereavement, and co-editor of the forthcoming book, The Practice of Clinical Social Work in Healthcare from Springer Press. Her clinical practice focuses on serious illness and grief work, and she has 15 years of clinical and leadership experience in healthcare. She holds advanced designations in Clinical Supervision and in Palliative Care, and post-graduate training in EMDR, AEDP and Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy. Dr. Nathanson received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her Master’s and Doctorate in Social Work from New York University.
