Practice with Abusers of Alcohol and Other Substances (SWGS 6417)

Paule Rogol LCSW, CASAC, is a native New Yorker with nearly a decade of experience working in the addiction field. She has worked in medical and other clinical settings specializing in both group and individual treatment with diverse populations. She has presented at professional conferences on substance use and aging at the annual NASW Addictions conference and on art in recovery at the NYS Psychological Association. She has supervised social work students during their internship at the Addiction Institute Opioid Treatment program, and has been teaching, “Practice with Abusers of Alcohol and other Substances” at Fordham since 2012. While utilizing various models of addiction, she emphasizes an empathic “harm reduction” approach and working “where the client is at”. She has studied both psychodynamic and behavioral approaches to counseling, and integrates motivational interviewing, CBT as well as other techniques that allow a client to moderate their addictive behaviors when they are ready. As an instructor, she is thrilled to share her passion about working in this field, and encourages a dynamic, interactive process in class exploring the many aspects of addiction. She also believes strongly that addressing the stigma of addiction is an important part of the work, and invites students to reflect on their own beliefs. She hopes to help students develop a fuller understanding of the challenges that an individual struggling with addiction faces, so that as future social workers, they enter the work force with knowledge and compassion about a common, yet stigmatized, illness.
