Preparing for the First Day
Introduce Your New Team Member
Once your candidate has accepted the offer and passed the background check, it's time to send a welcoming email. Don't wait until their first day! This is a great opportunity to build on the excitement generated during the search and selection process and ensure a smooth transition.
Here's what to include in your welcome email:
- Welcome and Congratulations: Express your excitement about their joining the team.
- Practical Information:
- Parking and Transportation: Provide details on parking options or public transportation routes.
- Location: Indicate the closest University entrance to their office.
- Office Protocol: Review any specific office protocols or dress codes.
- Contact Information: List important contact information, including HR, IT, and their direct supervisor.
- Encouragement: Let them know you're available to answer any questions and help them feel comfortable.
By sending a thoughtful welcome email, you'll help your new hire feel valued and excited to start their new role at Fordham.
Create a Detailed Agenda for Your New Hire's First Day
A well-structured agenda for your new employee's first day will not only demonstrate your preparedness but also help them feel organized and welcomed.
Remember to:
- Send the agenda in advance: Give your new hire time to review it and prepare any questions.
- Be flexible: Allow for some flexibility in case of unexpected changes.
- Follow up: After the first day, check in with your new hire to see if they have any questions or concerns.
By providing a clear and organized agenda, you'll help your new employee feel confident and prepared for their new role.
Preparing Your New Hire's Workspace
To ensure a smooth transition for your new employee, it's essential to have their workspace ready and organized before their first day.
Here are some key things to check:
- Clean and organized workspace: Ensure the office is clean and tidy, with all necessary equipment in place.
- Office supplies: Stock the office with essential supplies, such as pens, paper, and notepads.
- Accommodations: If the new hire requires any accommodations, ensure they are in place and ready to use.
- Training schedule: If applicable, establish a training schedule that aligns with the new hire's role and responsibilities.
Assign the New Employee an Onboarding Mentor
Employees meet with Human Resources and you, their Supervisor, during the hiring process, but it takes a team to onboard a new colleague. The Onboarding Mentor Program, another component of onboarding, is an opportunity for the employee to meet their colleagues to more easily acclimate to the Fordham culture.
