Welcome, newly admitted students
Welcome to a thrilling adventure! With your arrival at Fordham University, the Gabelli School of Business continues to advance its exciting undergraduate program in the heart of New York City.
By joining us to pursue the Bachelor of Science in Global Business, you will have the full advantage of being in the world capital of business as well as at the center of media and the performing arts, encircled by museums of every stripe and restaurants of every culture and cuisine. In New York City you will find people speaking nearly every language and worshipping God in a whole host of faith traditions, peacefully coexisting as in no other corner of the world.
There is so much to explore, not just in Manhattan, but throughout New York City. And when one wants to go further, New York is the gateway by ship, train, or plane to anywhere and everywhere. So, together, let us explore the world of business and the world around us—as we, here at the Gabelli School, continue to establish our new home at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus with quality undergraduate business education.
Where are you headed?
Not forgotten in the midst of this exhilarating enterprise is your own personal endeavor. You are launching your college career—an exciting, if daunting, reality in itself. Fear not! Many accomplished faculty, administrators, and staff are on hand to assist you.
As assistant dean for the BS in Global Business at Lincoln Center, I will serve as your academic advisor, a kind of coach or guide on your exciting journey. What is of most interest to me, as we begin this academic year, is finding out who you are.
What are your interests? What are your dreams? What do you hope for? And, concretely, what do you need in order to accomplish your goals?
Advising benefits
The Gabelli School will provide you with the support and opportunities you need to become more self-aware as you begin your college career. Through your participation in the first year advising program, you will learn more about college life and discover a host of opportunities lying before you.
During the summer before the first year at the Gabelli School of Business, entering students will participate in the GABELLI SMART summer engagement program. Students will be placed into groups called neighborhoods, which are composed of about 20 students. In the summer, the neighborhoods will receive mentorship from a Gabelli School resource team made up of an academic advisor, upperclass student mentors, alumni advocates, a faculty mentor, and a professional development advisor. Students will engage in weekly, synchronous sessions with their resource team. The summer experience will culminate with a neighborhood project. The neighborhoods will remain intact throughout the academic year for consistent advising and support.
We will discuss all the specific curricular requirements of the BS in Global Business, and you will learn how to stay on task to succeed. During your first year or two, you have time to fully consider each of the three possible concentrations available within your global business major: digital media and technology, global finance and business economics, and global marketing with a focus on consumer insight. Each of these draws on the values of a liberal arts education to add a strategic dimension to your business acumen and to assist you in perfecting your oral and written expression.
Now is the time to develop skills that will serve you well and to pick up some good habits, such as reading The Wall Street Journal every day. I urge you to also get involved in clubs and activities. Most importantly, prepare to do all you need to do to successfully transition to the demands of learning at the college level. I look forward to working with each of you over the course of the next four years.
