Gifts to the Library
The Fordham University Library collection has been developed to serve the needs of the students and faculty at a research institution. This collection extends beyond printed books to include video and sound recordings, archival collections, and digital resources in various formats for all subjects.
The generosity of patrons and friends helps us build our collection. We especially welcome items that we don’t already own and that support our curricula.
Guidelines
All gifts to the library must be accepted with the understanding that the donor may not place special restrictions on the use or disposal of gifts. The Fordham University Library becomes the owner of all donated materials and reserves the right to determine their retention, location, cataloging treatment and other considerations related to their use, maintenance or removal. Items that do not fall within the scope of the collection may be sent to other libraries in need, Better World Books, a library book exchange program, sold, or otherwise disposed of.
Criteria
Materials must be in good condition. Paperbacks and hardcovers that are falling apart, missing pages, or extensively marked up can not be accepted, nor can we accept books with mold or mildew. Individual issues or short runs of journals will not be accepted. DVDs and CDs will be accepted if they are in good condition; VHS and cassette tapes are not useful.
Acknowledgement and Receipt
The Library will acknowledge each gift which we accept with a letter of receipt. The receipt will include the number of items donated (or the approximate number in the case of large gifts); but it will not include an itemized inventory or a monetary value of the gift. By law, recipients are prohibited from appraising gifts. The donor must use an independent, third-party appraiser for this information. Tax forms and guidelines can be found at the Internal Revenue website:
