Professor Mackler has been a criminal defense and trial attorney for 29 years. He has represented thousands of clients charged with everything from misdemeanors to serious felonies including homicide. Professor Mackler was also the general counsel for the SUNY Brockport Student Government for 14 years. He represented the legal interests of the Student Government in many areas including first amendment issues relating to the student newspaper and founded the Brockport Legal Information Service. Prior to his legal career, Professor Mackler was the Director of the East African Student Programs at the Institute of International Education. In this capacity, he worked closely with East African missions to the United Nations. He is a runner and completed the New York Marathon in 1991.

  • 1980-1994: General counsel and advisor: Brockport Student Government, State University of New York at Brockport. Developed and supervised Brockport Legal Information Service, provided advice and counsel to students, Student Government, Student Senate and the student newspaper, The Stylus.
  • SUNY Brockport guest lecturer: international relations, anthropology, literature.
  • 1977-1980: Monroe County Public Defender’s Office, Rochester, NY.
