Carlos Javier El-Hage Guaristi (“Javier El-Hage”) is adjunct professor of Fundamental Lawyering Skills at Fordham University School of Law. El-Hage serves as Chief Legal & Policy Officer at the Human Rights Foundation (HRF), where he leads the organization’s impact litigation and research programs.

El-Hage is a Bolivian-American attorney admitted to practice in New York, with experience in comparative constitutional law, international democracy law, international human rights law, as well as corporate, securities and structured finance law.

El-Hage holds a J.D. degree from Fordham University School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He also holds master’s degrees in international law from Columbia University School of Law, and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

El-Hage is currently also adjunct professor at the law school of Universidad Francisco Marroquin where he teaches the “Introduction to the U.S. Legal System” course. Before moving to the United States in 2008, El-Hage was a professor of Constitutional Law for two years at the Universidad Privada de Santa Cruz-Bolivia. Among his publications on constitutional and international law, in 2010, El-Hage authored HRF’s report “The Facts and the Law behind the Democratic Crisis of Honduras 2009-2010,” which was extensively quoted by the Honduran Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2011.

As a private practice attorney, El-Hage was as an associate at Milbank LLP, where he was a member of the Global Capital Markets group and Alternative Investments Practice, representing investment banks and asset managers in the issuance of high-yield bonds and in structured credit and securitization transactions, in particular, of collateralized loan obligations.

In 2021, El-Hage published the article “Fixing ESG: Are Mandatory ESG Disclosures the Solution to Misleading Ratings?” in the Fordham Journal of Corporate and Financial Law. El-Hage has several research papers and publications that can be accessed in his SSRN page.
