Fall 2023 Mandatory New Student Veteran Orientation
August 23, 2023
10 AM - 4 PM followed by optional RamVet Family Dinner in Little Italy
WHERE: Fordham University Veteran Center
140 W. 62nd St., Room 145 (In the Gabelli Business Building)
New York, NY 10023
WHO: All newly accepted student veterans and military-connected students. (Veteran parents who are using their benefits for their children may also attend or zoom with us at 11 a.m. for an important “make the most of your benefits” presentation). Military spouses and dependents are welcome to attend, but your attendance is NOT mandatory.
WHAT: Find out everything you need to know about all Fordham has to offer for our student veterans and military-connected students. Learn how to maximize your benefits, meet fellow RamVets, tour the Rose Hill and Lincoln Center campuses, and get to know your “Ramily.”
The day begins at 10:00 with coffee and a light breakfast at our Veterans' Resource Center on the Lincoln Center Campus. You'll meet fellow RamVets and the staff from the Office of Military and Veterans' Services who will introduce you to other RamVets and walk you through the many resources, supportive services and career development opportunities you'll find through Fordham.
At 11 am, our certifying officials will explain the GI Bill, Yellow Ribbon, Chapters 31 and 35 and other veteran benefits. You will learn what you need to know to set up and maintain your benefits throughout the course of your studies. A Zoom link will be made available for military parents, spouses, dependents, and online students for this session.
At noon, we'll tour the Lincoln Center campus and explore the spots you'll need to know to get things done, get help, and have fun on campus. Then, we'll all take the RamVan, our intercampus transportation, up to our Rose Hill campus in the Bronx. We'll hear from financial aid, get more tips on how to succeed, have lunch, and then walk it off with a tour of the beautiful Rose Hill campus.
At 4pm, you have three options:
1) (the best option) Join us in Little Italy for an early dinner with other RamVets. Get the lowdown from our "veteran veterans" and make some friends!
2) Take the RamVan back to the Lincoln Center Campus, and return home from there
3) Leave directly from Rose Hill to return home.
After dinner, you can take the RamVan back to Lincoln Center (complementary) or depart directly from the Rose Hll campus.
WHAT TO WEAR: Dress comfortably and wear good walking shoes. Jeans, shorts, and sneakers are all fine. You'll be cool (sometimes cold) inside, and hot outside. If you want to wear a hat or tee shirt from your branch of service, go for it!
FOR THOSE WHO LIVE CLOSE TO OR NORTH OF THE BRONX: If you are driving from the Bronx or North of the Bronx, you may want to park your car in the Rose HIll campus and take the 9:00 RamVan (complementary) down to the Lincoln Center campus. That way, you'll have your car in Rose Hill at the end of the event. If you are driving to the Rose HIll campus, the GPS address is 2691 Southern Blvd. Bronx, NY 10458. If you are taking Metro North to the Rose Hill Campus, the Fordham stop on the New Haven and Harlem lines is steps away from our gate at 441 East Fordham Road. Please let us know if this is your plan so we can make sure you can park and ride the RamVan for free.
CAN'T MAKE IT? LET US KNOW. You will be learning crucial information, but we understand that this date conflicts with a couple of our Fordham programs. We will offer a second (shorter) in-person and online orientation, but we need to know how many people this affects. Please email [email protected] and let us know your name, phone number, and Fordham program you are in, as well as whether you prefer an evening or lunchtime orientation, and we will let you know when the next orientation will take place.
