New Media and Digital Design Curriculum
NMDD is a highly interdisciplinary program that is designed to cross boundaries. It not only brings together multiple disciplines, but also bridges the theoretical and the practical, providing an applied creative orientation with a deep grounding in social, historical and ethical understanding.
Students encounter a comprehensive but flexible learning experience. The major consists of eleven courses, five of which are required. Students must complete an introductory course; a fundamentals course in computer coding; an ethics course; and a supervised Capstone Project. An internship, completed either during the school term or over a summer, is also required.
The major is organized around three track concentrations.
- The New Media and Information concentration explores design, delving questions about the ways information systems and infrastructures are designed within institutional, cultural and community contexts.
- The Art, Text, and Design concentration explores graphic design as well as video, animated and multimedia storytelling in web and mobile contexts.
- The New Media and Commerce concentration explores digital business, marketing, analytics and entrepreneurship.
Each concentration is delineated by six elective courses from the 20 or more contributed to each track by our five collaborative departments and programs. A recommended Concept Course is offered in each concentration to ground that learning area. Majors may also customize their course of study to some extent by importing up to two courses from one of the other track concentrations or from Fordham classes outside the program entirely.
NMDD may also be pursued as a minor, for which students must complete the introductory course and the computer science fundamentals course, plus any four electives of their choice from within the program curriculum.
